Eugenio Montejo: An Introduction

En un poema titulado significativamente “Creo en la vida”, el poeta venezolano Eugenio Montejo (1938-2008) afirmaba: “pero yo soy ateo de nada / excepto de la muerte”. Era su manera de registrar el profundo arraigo que sentía en lo que él mismo llamaba “ teredad ”, esa especie de experiencia afectiva consustancial de la vida en la Tierra. Sin embargo, hace diez años, con gran resistencia, una enfermedad de acción rápida e inoportuna le impidió seguir entre nosotros, al menos físicamente.

Como homenaje a su obra creativa y a la persona misma, Latin American Literature Todayha elaborado este dossier, compuesto por textos de poetas, ensayistas y críticos expertos en la obra de Montejo (Luis Enrique Belmonte, Miguel Gomes, Nicholas Roberts y yo mismo) que abordan algunas de las variadas facetas de esta fascinante y compleja obra ; una “entrevista coral” que sirve como muestra de un proyecto ideado por Montejo, en el que múltiples interlocutores (cuatro, en este caso: Julio Bolívar, Edmundo Bracho, Marina Gasparini y José Pulido) le hacen preguntas con el fin de explorar su proyecto estético y vital; y, por último, una selección de su poesía, no ajena a las circunstancias de su partida, junto con uno de sus ensayos más emblemáticos, “El taller blanco”, en el que podemos encontrar varios de los elementos esenciales que constituyen la base de su vocación poética.

Arturo Gutiérrez Plaza (Caracas, 1962) is a poet, essayist, and university professor. He has published books of poetry, essays, and literary research, and has received several awards and contributed to numerous international journals. He is Associate Editor, correspondents’ coordinator, and co-founder of Latin American Literature Today. His writing has been featured in anthologies published around the world and has been translated into various languages. He is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Oklahoma.

Arthur Malcolm Dixon is co-founder, lead translator, and Managing Editor of Latin American Literature Today. His book-length translations include the novels Immigration: The Contest by Carlos Gámez Pérez and There Are Not So Many Stars by Isaí Moreno, both from Katakana Editores, and the poetry collections Intensive Care by Arturo Gutiérrez Plaza and Wild West by Alejandro Castro, both from Alliteration Publishing. He works as a community interpreter in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where from 2020 to 2023 he was a Tulsa Artist Fellow.
